Women’s Health : After Giving Birth

During last week’s Product Education Zoom, Amy Venner continued our women’s health series with an amazing call on the teenage years of a woman’s life through pregnancy. On this week’s call, Dave Sandoval took the reins to conclude our 3 part women’s health series by highlighting the postpartum stage. Let’s recap what we learned!

After Giving Birth

Once a person has successfully delivered their beautiful baby, they enter into what is called postpartum phase which typically lasts 6 to 8 weeks after giving birth. It is strongly recommended that during this crucial phase, the mother consumes a diet composed of fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, and lean protein.

This is what Dave and the rest of the Purium Community refers to as the Core 4:

  • Apothe-Cherry: the ultimate fruit
  • Power Shake: incredible combination of complex carbohydrates and green vegetable nutrition
  • Super Amino 23: critically important for lean protein
  • Biome Medic: gut health and digestion support

Breastfeeding

Dave shared some questions regarding breastfeeding and some science-backed reasons why breastfeeding is important.

What if my breasts are too small?

Whether a person’s breasts are small or large, it is going to have the internal mechanism to fully nourish and feed a baby.

How long should I breastfeed?

An important disclaimer is that this topic is subjective and Dave doesn’t enjoy telling people what they have to do. With that said, Dave strongly recommends a minimum of 1 year and hopefully 2 years to up to 3 and a half years as Dave’s wife personally did for their first child.

What’s something I might not know at all about breastfeeding?

Almost immediately after a baby is born, hospitals often put these cute hats on their head. As cute as those hats maybe, Dave shared why it is not a good idea at all for babies to wear them.

When the baby’s head is exposed, it gives off an odor that is picked up by the mother’s nose. So when the mom is holding the baby close to her face, there are actually pheromones inside of the baby’s scalp that trigger the breast to start producing milk.

If you cover up the top of the baby’s head immediately after birth, that smell, that factory trigger is not going to happen. Unless if its for a quick photo op, never let the hospital put that little hat on.

Should I breastfeed in the middle of the night?

While it is fairly common for new mothers to pump their milk during the day so someone else can feed the baby at night so mom can get extra sleep, it has drawbacks. Dave shared that babies are programmed to wake their mom up at night to make sure the mom’s body doesn’t stop producing breast milk.

If you pump the breast milk or don’t have it consumed or removed for 8 or 10 hours, then your body will stop producing that breast milk even if you’re pumping to make up for it.

As uncomfortable and difficult as it may be, let your baby feed at night if you are really serious about having enough breast milk to feed the baby.

What if I’m not producing enough breast milk?

Dave shared that Purium has the simplest solution at Purium: Barley Green Juice. 2 to 3 small glasses a day, you will likely start to produce more than enough, possibly even an excess of breast milk.

Top reasons why breastfeeding is so important

  • it creates a bond between mother and child
  • it creates the perfect balance of nutrients to nourish a baby that no formula can ever come close to
  • The IQ of babies that are breastfed are measurably and significantly better
  • The immune system of babies that are breastfed are measurably and significantly better
  • Breastmilk is the most inexpensive and accessible baby food you’ll ever find
  • You’ll limit waste and save a lot of money through breastfeeding
  • The number 1 way to lose weight gained during pregnancy is to let your baby suck it out of calorically

Testostorone

Many people are aware of the importance of testosterone for men, but Dave dived into why testosterone is also critical for women as well.

Once a woman has entered the childbearing age, their testosterone begins to drop up to 3% a year. That means a mother could see their testosterone reduced by over 50% by the time her children are reaching puberty.

Testosterone is critical for women in a number of ways. Number 1 is it helps get your ovaries ready to bear children. It will also drive libido which may help set the mood to make babies. Testosterone also builds bones strong and protects against osteoporosis (bone disease that weakens bones).

Another thing that testosterone does that Dave shared was it makes you optimistic of the future. It gives you hope and makes you happy. For that reason, we are big believers in the Super Life Formula which naturally increases testosterone.

A fun fact that Dave talked about was how Super Life Formula was originally introduced as Super Male Formula, we found that more women were benefiting than men because they were very aware of their need for more testosterone and found that natural source effectively in Super Male Formula. This is what prompted the name to be changed to Super Life Formula.

Other Critical Hormones

Estrogen is a vitally important hormone as it supports healthy female organs and menstruation. With a society that over consumes soy and is exposed to many microplastics, Dave explained why it’s important to understand that greens like Purium’s Power Shake and Green Spectrum have critical phytoestrogenic balancing qualities. That’s a long phrase that simply means they help normalize and balance testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.

Providing your body with the proper nutrients can have a tremendous effect on your fertility, mood swings, and the steady balance of production of the proper hormones.

Next, Dave talked about progesterone. Progesterone keeps the menstrual cycle balanced. An irregular menstrual cycle could lead to fibroids and other complications like that. Also, once your ovum has been fertilized, progesterone will be critical in preparing the body for the changes it needs while pregnant.

As women age, their progesterone gets reduced, testosterone as Dave discussed earlier gets reduced, prolactin practically gets eliminated, and estrogen rises. This causes a hormonal imbalance which could lead to mood swings, depression, weight gain, and other mental, physical, and emotional issues that are highly avoidable.

Purium has been developing a new product to support menopause for women called Meno-Positive. It’s been in development for over 2 years and we are super excited to launch this product to help women thrive during their menopause years.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our 3 calls dedicated to women’s health. We have one more coming, but it will not be next week, but the following week.

Next week is going to be an amazing call. While Dave can’t tell you what the subject matter is, he can promise that it will be a call filled with a super set of surprises that you are not going to want to miss.

On the last Wednesday of the month, Dave will dedicate the final edition of this series on women’s health to support women dealing with menopause and post-childbearing years
